In written language the vertical stroke represents the oneness of god. It also represents movement and relationship; power descending upon mankind from above or the yearnings of mankind toward higher things.

In the horizontal stroke, we see the earth plane, in which life flows evenly and where all are guaged aginst the plane of the horizon.
